Italy Part 2 (Lido di Jesolo)

May 2008

During the second half of our Italian tour, the Purdue jazz band stayed in Lido di Jesolo, a costal town along the Adriatic Sea. The significance of this town is that it is a short waterbus ride to Venice. To stay in Venice is very expensive; therefore, the best option for poor student tourists is to stay in nearby coastal towns, such as Lido di Jesolo.

Though it wasn't Venice, the beach held a gorgeous view. In fact, I don't remember staying in my room for long periods of time. If I wanted to take a nap, I would take my towel, pillow, and sunglasses and lounge on the available beach chairs along the coast.

Looking out towards the sea, the view in front was an endless gorgeous blue horizon. To the left, hotels and beach chairs endlessly aligned. However to the right, a light house sat on land that seemed to jut far into the Adriatic Sea, intensely arousing my curiosity for a closer look. I was not the only one.

On the day before we toured Venice, the group literally had the entire day to explore the area. Lido di Jesolo was not a large or historic town, meaning that there were few attractions to entertain us. Therefore, it was not a surprise when people started talking about the lighthouse. Many band members started over, quickly realizing that the walk took longer than expected. A hike that "should" have taken perhaps 20 minutes, took about 45 minutes in reality. Those who survived the hike and actually reached the destination were Christopher John, John Dvorchak, and me.

Up close, the lighthouse was much larger than expected and located on the other side of a canal. We could not cross this canal because the waves from the Adriatic Sea crashed violently against the rocks that lined the canal. The "jut of land" I previously mentioned was actually a great pile of boulders, strategically placed to break the waves that would have otherwise crashed into the lighthouse.

Prior to this experience, I knew of John Dvorchak but did not know much about him. This trip changed that very quickly. For starters, he's a guy that will do what he's set out to do. For example, the trail ended in front of the boulders that comprised the "jut of land." It was John Dvorchak who suggested we climb the boulders. I, however, was freaking out the whole way; I imagined officials catching us, then dragging us to their station because we didn't have our passports. But since Christopher John followed John Dvorchak, I felt I had no say in the matter.

I figured the boys would have stopped when the boulders became more difficult to climb...nope. We fought our way until we reached the very end, about 150 feet away from the coastline. It was definitely worth the effort. Out there, you instantly felt calm. Gentle breezes brushed your face as waves lapped below. Noise from the town of tourists were drowned out. We sat there for hours as the high tide came and the sun set. During that time, we discovered that each of us viewed music more seriously than a mere pasttime.

Eventually, we decided to make our way back before the darkness shadowed the dangerous cracks between the boulders. But through the rest of the trip, the three of us remained close.

The Beginning Part I: Italy

May 2008

"Let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start..." and that is with the Purdue Jazz Band. Most characters in this blog participate in the jazz program. However, I met none of them until the jazz band opted to tour Italy.

The trip was optional and open to all bands within the jazz program. However, most people who signed up came from my specific band group. The only "outsiders" were John Dvorchak, Christopher John, Monica, and James.

I met Monica first. There was a total of four females on the trip, automatically assigning the four of us as roommates. Since the dorms were closing, I offered for her to stay at my apartment until we left. So naturally, I met Monica first.

Next was Christopher John. Due to finals, the Italy band could not rehearse together until ONE WEEK before the tour. Therefore, we practiced approximately 7 hours per day, leaving one hour for lunch. Instead of eating out everyday, I wanted to save money and invited other members to join me on a picnic. However, little did I know that Indiana weather would remain cold and damp the entire week. It was quite miserable. One afternoon, I even prompted Monica to eat outside. We lasted a half hour. Therefore, under these conditions, no one wished to join Monica and me...except Christopher John, who was generally enthusiastic and gung-ho toward the idea of a picnic. Because of that attitude, I often paired myself with Christopher John when I wanted to break from the band and explore the cities of Italy.

Not long after, I met John Dvorchak and James. On the day before departure, one band member held a party. John Dvorchak, Christopher John, and James came but banded together. Already knowing everyone else on the trip, I was determined to learn these boys' names. I'm glad I made the effort.

There are thousands of stories about Italy I could share. However, there is one revelent to the topic.

Introduction

Welcome to Purdue University, the birthplace of the blues-influenced rock band, Witch Doctors. The band formed in the Spring of 2009, consisting of four musically-talented members: John Dvorchak (DUH-VORE-CHACK), guitar and vocals; Dan Varnau (VAR-GNAW), bass; Christopher John Schoepp (SHEP), keyboard; and Cody Messick (MESS-ICK), drums.

However, this blog is not about them. This blog is about the goings-on behind the scenes in our social lives...of how I see and remember it.

Besides the band members, key characters of the blog are the following:

Allen-human teddybear. Nuff said. :D
Flo-the friend with the fro! She is attitude and competition and loves a good laugh. She uses words eloquently and writes the most beautiful paragraphs.
Grace-loves drama as much as she loves life. Obviously, she majors in theater. Best friend of Christopher John, and has a multitude of random surprising talents (i.e. play guitar, sew purses, race in triathlons, etc.).
Jacqueline-hardworking hottie who can't get enough of French culture. I swear she looks exactly like Audrey Tautou; I bet she planned it that way in the womb.
James-roommate to Christopher John. He's always scheming pranks and cooks the best hamburgers of anyone I know. Not hard on the eyes, either. ;)
Liam-roomate of John Dvorchak. Lively and easy-going individual who knows the most random groups of people on campus.
Monica-the most lovable nerd you'll meet. She's smart, she's funny, and she'll be the first one to show up when you need her the most.
Ruby-roommate of Grace and best friend of Allen. Cute bombshell who gets along with anyone...because no one can say "No" to her. I certainly can't.
